Great Tarotists of Yesteryear:
Etteilla
By James W. Revak

King of Spaces from the Petit EtteillaA Brief Explanation of the King of Spades from the Petit Etteilla

The principal meaning of the card appears as key words at the extreme top, Homme de robe, which means Lawyer.  The meaning of the card, when reversed, appears at the extreme bottom, Homme veuf, which means Widower.

Other key words indicate meanings of the card when combined with certain other ones.  For example, on the extreme left and right sides appears 4 Rois . Grand Honneur, which translates as 4 Kings . Great Honor.  In other words, if four kings appear in one spread, they indicate Great Honor.

Illustration credit: Petit Etteilla, a contemporary deck published by France Cartes and based on Etteilla’s pack of 1791.
